Looking for: RAF fighter crash at Wesendorf Airfield / Germany in 1946 or 1947?

Hi all,

I am looking for a unknown RAF fighter crash at former Luftwaffe airfield Wesendorf / Germany in 1946 or 1947?
One or two years after the war crashed a unknown RAF fighther plane at this airfield. The pilot died.

Many thanks for any information.

Best wishes
Rüdiger

Rüdiger,

The CWGC website mentions two RAF pilots who were killed during 1946 and are buried at Celle War Cemetery.
They are F/O George A. Cook of 16 Squadron (had Spitfires at that time) with date 15-2-1946 and W/O (Pilot) Norman Dixon on 27-4-1946.

Flight Magazine in its Aug. 29, 1946 issue states that Cook was killed on active service.

So far I haven't found if these men were involved in flying accidents, but it may be start.

Regards,

Leendert

Rüdiger,

F/Lt Cook presumably involved in crash of Spitfire FR XIV serial MT852.

Flew into tree descending out of low cloud Celle, spitfires.ukf.net says.

Spitfire was assigned to 16 Squadron, Cook's unit

Leendert

Just found a possibility for Dixon's aircraft: Spitfire PR XI, serial PL894. Unit: 1410 Flight.

Above mentioned website says: crashed on takeoff pilot killed Celle CE 27-4-46

Gruss,

Leendert

Hello Leendert,

many thanks for your information !

I think these crashes are at Celle Airfield´s Wietzenbruch or Hustedt and not at Wesendorf airfield.
Both reports said Celle.

Best wishes
Rüdiger
