Post Re: Luftwaffe Personnel Post War Employment

Gentlemen,

I knew there were plenty of pilots from the wartime Luftwaffe that went to Spain after WWII to work for the Spanish leader Franco as advisors for the Spanish Air Force and civil aviation.

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Major Ulrich Knauth KG 4 and later JG units ended up in Spain with the state civil airforce. He died in 1974 , his son and grandson are still in senior position in the Spanish air frieght business.

Karl-Heinz Nebel ex 9./JG 51 became a builder post-war and built the house (complete with Ochs-und-Schaf Bar) that he was living in when Ashley Lamb and myself interviewed him in 2004

Re: Luftwaffe Personnel Post War Employment

Gentlemen,

I was thinking very hard about what other named Luftwaffe pilots besides Siegfried Freytag that end up in the French Foreign Legion. So far I couldn't think of any. Most of them had end up as ground infantryman. Maybe a few ended up flying helicopters. There was one former Stuka pilot that wrote his autobiography about his time not only as a Stuka pilot, but also as a infantryman in the French Foreign Legion. Unfortunately it's not in English language. I think his last name was Ellers.

Sincerely,

Edward L. Hsiao

Edward,

You are thinking of Bernhard Ellwanger (17.02.1924-11.01.2011).

Cheers,
Andrew A.

Robert Mason commented about an ex-Luftwaffe pilot "Frank Gotler' flying Hueys with him in Mason's fascinating book "ChickenHawk" about the War in Vietnam. He noted Gotler's German accent.
