Information concerning loss of Uffz. Peter Demarteau- Atlantic - 26.05.1944
hi,
Can anyone provide details of the oss of Uffz. Peter Demarteau who was killed on an air mission over the Atlantic on the 26th May 1944? His death card describes him as being based 'on the Spanish border in use over the Atlantic Ocean', from January 1944 but then he fell - 'on May 26, overtook him on a sortie with his 6-engined grosfernaufklarer'. Not sure what that means? Thanks for help Rick |

Re: Information concerning loss of Uffz. Peter Demarteau- Atlantic - 26.05.1944
Rick, he was a Gunner in Ju290A-4 0164 (6-engined grosfernaufklarer' = large 6 engined recon. aircraft although 0164 was a four engined 290 not a 6 engine 390 ) 9V+GK of 1/FAG 5 based at Mont de Marsen, his aircraft fell to fighters in the evening. Of the crew of 10 five were picked up by a naval unit from their one man dinghies, main dinghy having been damaged in attack, I think this has been on TOCH before,

Rick, 9V+GK (crew of Ltn. Nonnenberg) took off around 1100hrs in company with the aircraft flown by Hpt. Pavetke, the St.Kap. of 1/FAGr5 I believe was Hpt. Augustin,

J900162 a Ju290-A3which became SB+QL, then 9V+GK then 9V+EK Abandoned Salzburg later to become RAF AM 57 (some also claim her as 9V+MK) J900164 a Ju290-A2which became SB+QN, then PI+PR, 9V+GK shot down May 1944 over Atlantic J900181 a Ju290-A7which became KR+LL, crashed on landing later repaired and coded 9V+GK The only reference to a six engined aircraft shot down was this one first posted on TOCH and archived (this reference was made on uboat.net): Quote:
It was replied to by a female diver at TOUCH, who cited data from a slightly worn Junkers constructor's plate. Ruben Whittemore and his wife Paula however have also dived the crash site off Owl's Head and report there are still six engines on the seabed there. If we accept that only one Ju-390 was built then by definition this could not be the wreck on the Atlantic seabed. |
