10./JG-27 Pilot Loss - Any Allied Claims?
Hello all,
Would anyone be able to tell me please if there were any Allied claims for a Messerschmitt-109 off the coast of Croatia on 22nd December 1943? The loss belongs to 10./JG-27 with the aircraft being lost near the island of Korcula to 'reasons unknown' and the pilot, Uffz Franz Koderer, being listed as Missing In Action. He is listed in the DRK Vermisstenbildliste volume for aircrew. The aircraft in question was Bf-109G-6 760004. The relevant volume of 'Die Jagdfliegerverbände' shows this as the only loss of IV/JG-27 that day and while it mentions that it was lost on a mission a separate table doesn't show any alarm starts for that day and the only missions mentioned near that date are for the 20th & 26th December. Looking through the web, there is a site ( http://forum.armyairforces.com/MACR-...r-m143063.aspx ) that has mention of him being mentioned on another site about losses in Yugoslavia relating to a B-24 (Serial 42-73137) loss on the 24th November which seems to confuse the issue somewhat but as I can not find a direct reference to this incident I can not shed any light on it. The loss of the B-24 is apparently mentioned in MACR-1300 but the Yugoslavian Losses site supposedly mentions him in relation to its loss with him being killed that day - and then lists him again on the correct date.

Re: 10./JG-27 Pilot Loss - Any Allied Claims?
Hi Kevin,
On 22 December 1943 there were no USAAF claims, definitely none by Nos. 239, 244 or 324 Wings, and as far as I can tell, none by any other Allied units. No. 145 Squadron flew a mission to Korcula during the day because there was a report of an invasion, but they saw no enemy aircraft or ground activity. There was very bad weather in the Italy/Croatia area on this day. Cheers, Andrew A. Air War Publications - www.airwarpublications.com/earticles |

Re: 10./JG-27 Pilot Loss - Any Allied Claims?
Hello Andrew,
Thanks for the reply and details. Judging from what you mention it looks like it could well be a weather related loss or a technical fault with the aircraft rather than a clash with Allied aircraft. Much appreciated.

Re: 10./JG-27 Pilot Loss - Any Allied Claims?
On 22 December 1943 Fl.Fü. Kroatien engaged a pair of Bf 109G's for armed recce and fighter protection, and eight other Bf 109G's were engaged as fighter protection in the operation "Herbstgewitter II". During these sorties two aircraft were shot down by friendly fire, one by the Kriegsmarine flak and another by Wehrmacht. Uffz. Koderer probably fell to marine gunners, as he went missing near the island of Korčula. The other plane lost that day was probably W.Nr.20682 of NAGr.12, which was reported to have belly-landed north of Mirci (possibly Mirke near Jablanica in Herzegovina) and had to be written off (80% damage).
