Photos for ID

All:

I recently came into possession of digital copies of photo scrapbooks from my Great Uncle (397th FS pilot Edward Dame). I thought two in particular might interest folks on this forum.

First attached photo appears to be a wrecked radar equipped Bf 110 -- am I wholly off base?

Second photo is a nice shot of a Bf 109 -- appears to me to be Black or Red 10. I can't make out any distinctive Jagdgeschwader marking near the cockpit and I don't see any recognition banding on the tail. Also, the tail is missing where I believe the W.Nr. would be.

One clue that may help with any ids -- these were likely taken in the late fall/early winter of 1944 at either Chievres, Belgium or Juvincourt, France.

Re: Photos for ID

Hi there Ed,

The Bf 109 is the Erla built Bf 109 G-6 W.Nr. 413 50x "Grüne (?) 10", I./JG 3, Metz - Frescatay, November 1944.

For other pics of this machine and Metz, check this link:

Marc:

Thanks! I should have thought of Metz as that was the 368th FG's next base after Juvincourt. Merry Christmas!

Re: Photos for ID

You're most welcome, Paul.

As fo the first pic, you're correct. It is a Bf 110 G-4, most probably from III./NJG 4. This unit was stationed in Juvincourt until their withdrawal in late August 1944. Notice also the Fw 190 A-8 of which only the rear of the canopy and the beginning of the fin are seen up front.

Merry Christmas on your side of the pond !

Re: Photos for ID

Marc:

I found one more picture of the boneyard at Metz (attached). This one has more undifferentiated wreckage, although the one piece (wing or fuselage?) with the balkenkreuz has markings that appear to overlay the balkenkreuz but are illegible to my eyes given the quality of the image.

Also, after looking back at my great uncle's service records and the 368th FG chronology, I think all three of these pictures were taken in January 1945. This makes sense given the snow in all the pictures as opposed to the mud in the November 1944 pictures you linked in your earlier replies.

Best regards,
Paul
