Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hurricane P3732, which was lost in Greece.
There seems to be confusion about the circumstances of its loss. According to AIR81/6133: https://discovery.nationalarchives.g...ls/r/C16755431 it was shot down on 15 April 1941. |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Hi Andy. A mystery, a Greek archaeology association says the pilot F/L J F Mackie (Canadian) was shot down in either P3732 or V7419 on the 15th. but the latter was most likely P/O Chetham as per National Archives. Both pilots were certainly killed (JG77); the wrecks were found near Larissa by the river Pinelos. A 33 Sqn. erk records the 2 pilots were "Chatham" and "Jackie", obviously mis-spelt. The aircraft in the German photo (including P3732 and some Greek) were lost to "strafing in the South-East area". Would you agree that Mackie was shot down in another ?
By 18 May the ORB states " all our remaining machines having been wrecked by strafing or shot down". Regards Nick Incidentally Hobby Master do a model of V7419 supposedly flown by Pattle in April. Last edited by Buckeye30; 2nd November 2024 at 13:46. Reason: Spelling |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Reading Air War for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete 1940-41 the three authors says regarding the losses
"Lt Jacob Arnoldy obtained hits on Charles Chetham's aircraft. Onlookers saw the latter come down in a seemingly controlled glide and disappear behind some trees outside the airfield boundary; he was in fact killed". Mackie then shot down Arnoldy and then "Fw Otto Köhler engaged him from astern. The Hurricane flipped over, caught fire and exploded on crashing, killing the Canadian pilot." What about if we change the two aircraft? Mackie lost in V7419 and Chetham in P3732? It is perhaps even more possible that P3732 was among the many Hurricanes DBR by strafing 109s at Larissa (33Sq's base) later during the same day. Looking at the picture the cockpit looks intact, aircraft has its wheels down etc very much looking like an aircraft which has been damaged on the ground.... B Rgds Stig |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Stig. Of the 3 Hurricanes which took off to meet the strafing 109s on the 15th. only one ( Sgt. G E C Genders RAFVR) returned to the field; as the German photo shows her later ( 12 May after 33's last 4 Hurricanes had retired to Crete on 27 April) it's possible that Genders was flying P3732 on 15 April and one of the 2 pilots killed on that date was in another.
Both Hurricanes lost on the 15th were wrecked; Chetham is buried in Phaleron Cemetery but Mackie was not found and remembered on the Alamein Memorial. I think they lost 6 pilots at Larissa and most of their Hurricanes (Mk.Is). Regards Nick |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Indeed Nick
I am also leaning against the theory the photo shows, if not Gender's aircraft, a Hurricane lost on the ground. B Rgds Stig |
