Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Faenor. The pilot standing right could be Capt. Alfred Markel (334FS and HQ), the artwork and star are typical for 4FG late 43 - early 44. He flew a P-47C QP--M but lost with another pilot. This looks like an early "D".

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
Sorry Faenor I don't think it's 4FG; I found another copy of the same photo, the last 3 numbers are 335 or 835. This is a D-21 or earlier as it has a Curtiss prop. There's a B-17 in the background so maybe a bomber base. The back of the photo says
"Passed for Personal Use only. Not for Publication. Intelligence Office. RALPH G. PLA**** Capt. Air Corps" .. Dated Sept. 1944 A little research on the name I think. Regards Nick |

Hi Nick, probably yes - because this maschine is without guns - maybe is from some Bomb Group and used like liaison plane/training plane - we have more similar cases. But my ide about the 4th FG plane: 1) The lady is in the blue circle - same style like by machines P-47D 42-8659 or P-47C 41-6183 (both 336th FS) 2) same position of this emblem like by other planes from 4th FG, if you compare is with others group 3) 334th FS have more planes named "Miss xxx" - example famous Miss Dallas 42-7876 or Miss Plainfield 42-7945 So maybe this plane is originally from the 4th FG, or I´m completelly wrong :-) But still thank you and have a great day! Re: eBay: Allied intrest
One thing for sure, the plane in the second photo is well-maintained, cleaned and polished, unusual for that date (Sept. 44). No other markings apart from artwork and star (ie. none overpainted if she was with a FG). Also she still has the white nose and tail bands ordered in Feb. 1943; the visible last 3 of the serial (335, 535 or 835) fit 11 "D"s from D-RE to D-20 but couldn't find any connections to 4th FG. Many of Don Allen's paintings in 334th were on the centre cowl panel which could be transferred to a later plane, and also with a disc background. There were 7 known P-47s in the 4th FG with "Miss" in the name. But this style of lettering can be seen also in other FGs like 355th and 356th, but not widespread.
The unusual name is a reference to "Miscellanious" ie. a mixture of different things, maybe a P-47 and B-17s....it's a big airfield so probably a bomb group; unfortunately no markings visible on the B-17. Possibly a senior pilot flew her hence the extra-clean appearance. Regards Nick |

Re: eBay: Allied intrest
The one that caught my eye was Photo 18.
B-24D 41-11595 originally with Halverson detachment (HALPRO) in Palestine, flew their first mission June 11 1942 as No.1 ("Old Faithful"); when HALPRO was formulated as 376BG in Oct. she became No. 46 then 25 as "Terry the Third Cossack-Runner" (right side) and "Lily of the Desert" (left side). Artwork based on a Vargas pin-up. She wasn't on the Ploesti mission in Aug. 43. After the first HALPRO mission she returned 3 B-24 crews which had been interred in Turkey. She finally crashed in Cornwall 21 Dec.43 before she could return to the States; a sad end but she would have been scrapped over there. She still had her "Desert" markings, RAF fin flash and 376th rudder stripe with number 25. 27 missions as Halpro no.1, 2 as no.46 and 3 as no.25. Nick |
