Bf109G-6 WNr 15978 7./JG52 5.Sep.1943

Hello!

Bf109G-6 WNr.15978 from 7./JG52 5.Sep.1943 was lost in LQu.75684, i.e. in the Black Sea, SE of Gelendzhik, far from the shore and further out the German-held territory. Nethertheless he returned, as no info about the pilot loss.
Seenot didn't report any rescuee that day, Kriegsmarine - the same. How did the pilot survived?

It seems something wrong, maybe location or something else.

Is the pilot's name known?

Best regards,
Andrey

Re: Bf109G-6 WNr 15978 7./JG52 5.Sep.1943

Hello Andrey,

according to JFV 12/II the pilot of the Bf 109 G-6 15978 crash-landed west of Gorlowka (PlQu 34 Ost/7968.), he was unhurt. Therefore no name in the GQM loss return. The PlQu. 75684 is a typo.
On 5 Sep 1943 the base of the III./JG 52 was Stalino. The four claims on this day were located at the PlQu. 79393, 79484, 79684 and 79883, areas north of Stalino.

Regards
Leo

Leo

Sorry if this ends up in the "stupid questions department", but I have never really got the hang on PlQ and how to locate them.

If the crash was in 34 Ost/7968 but all claims PlQ have five digits, shouldn't the crash place also have five digits (or is it possibly so your dot means one digit is missing)?

I notice one claim is in 79684 which with a corrected digit 5 to a 9 would make at least some sense to me....

Cheers
Stig

Hello Stig,

in JFV 12/II is the map "Luftwaffen- und Jägermeldenetz Ostfront ab Sommer 1943". In the Luftwaffenmeldenetz the area west of Gorlowka is situated in the Großtrapez 79, in the Mitteltrapez 6 and in the Kleintrapez 8. The exact point is unknown to me. Therefore I have omitted the fifth digit and replaced by a dot.

Leo

Thank you!
I have JFV 12/II, but I didn't look at it before asking the question. Shame on me!

5.Sep.43 was the day of one of "convoy battles" so I thought the loss in question was during that clash.

Best regards,
Andrey

Thanks Leo

So PlQ 34 Ost/79684 is a plausible spot then.

Cheers

Re: Bf109G-6 WNr 15978 7./JG52 5.Sep.1943

I have checked JFV 12/II finally. Indeed, in the text the location is "w.Gorlowka" but in the loss list (p.499) the info is the same as in the Gen.Qu. return (75684).

But III./JG52 was in the Donbass indeed, so WNr 15978 hardly fell into the Black Sea

I wonder where the authors found the info about "w.Gorlowka" location?
