Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hello,
I've moved this link from my post Chinese Aircraft on this board,as I now, rightly or wrongly believe I've identified the aircraft as a Tachikawa KKY-2 Aikoku 241. However, if anyone has any information as to the significance of the emblem on the fuselage I'd still be very interested. https://www.ebay.com/itm/26668173404...YAAOSw6tBl0rfW Here is a photo of Aikoku 241 with different markings to that shown by the llinked photo https://jmodels.net/de-hombres-y-maq...tachikawa-kky/ Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Larry, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to provide this interesting information on 10 Dokuritsu Hikōtai.
Unfortunately this has awakened a temptation on my part to look through the Japanese Monographs referenced by yourself in your sources. But before I do I have a couple of questions in this regard: 1. I take it that these are the Monographs referred to by yourself https://pacificwararchive.wordpress....se-monographs/ 2. I would like to seek information on non combat units of the JAAF & JNAF,specifically the type of aircraft used and the number of each type assigned to specific second line units.Would I find this in the monographs? As an example, picking up on my last post in this thread, would it be possible to discover which units operated the KKY-2 in China? I must stress that I'm not looking for you to answer this question, just whether searching is even likely to be productive. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Clint -
To Question #1: Yes, these are the ones I used. When I used them 20 to 25 years ago, they were on microfilm reels that I obtained from the USN history archives at the Navy Yard in Washington. Here is another series that might be helpful to you: http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/AAF/...ex.html#pageVI To Question #2: Yes again; but you would have to painstakingly go through all of the Monographs to find what you are looking for. However, there is another source that is organized unit-by-unit in numerical and alphabetical order that would be helpful with the aircraft each unit had: a) NARA WashDC: RG 457/SRH-259. b) Naval Historical Center (Washington Navy Yard, WashDC): Order of Battle of the JNAF. Microfiche F 2076 (7 fiche). Order of Battle of the JAAF. Microfiche F 2075 (12 fiche). HTH, L. deZ. |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Looks like a simplified version of the Utsonomia Communications School, usually in a circle on a coloured band.
Nick Could be a Ki.54 "Hickory" (?). |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Nick,
I considered a Ki-54 as a possibilty, but I thought that the photo appeared to show the fairing usually containing a machine gun on Ki-21 aft of the tail. With regard to the unit. You may be correct, frankly I don't know. But what I would like to mention is that Arawasi's book on the Ki-21 has two photos of Ki-21 with that symbol but surrounded by a circle, captioned as belonging to a Headquarters transport unit under the Third Air Division. So possibly different sub-units of the same transport unit, or perhaps another HQ transport unit. Purest speculation on my part obviously. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. These are the 2 photos I saw of Ki.54s ( this page and next) with that insignia apparently in a Communications unit; also referenced as such in Barry Kettley's "Emblems of the Rising Sun" as allocated to Utsonomia (and with a red band ). As you say maybe different sections but just guessing.

Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the link. I shall search for further aircraft from Utsonomiya. A follow up question. Do you know what the symbol shown is called in either English or Japanse ? Just thinking it might help when searching. I am also inclinded to think that given the seller is Chinese, possibly the aircraft is from a China based unit. Another track to follow in any event. Re: Photos Japanese Army Airforce
Hi Clint. I think our Japanese friends will be of more use but I'm sure the emblem is a school insignia not a character; it has a flag or pennant for Communications and 2 triangles for incoming-outgoing. Mito and Utsonomia are only about 30 miles apart and both were targets of fire-raids by B-29s on Aug. 2 and 12 July respectively. Both are on Honshu NE of Tokyo.
You might find this link useful in the future, you can draw the character and then identify it. A steady hand is needed which I havn't got. Incidentally the 105th. Training School had a similar emblem but turned 90 degrees. Nick https://www.japandict.com/kanjidraw |
