Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of Martinsyde G.105 'Elephant' A1581 AT: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SMALL-AND...UAAOSwJp1eqVfH So given that the aircraft is not an Avro 504K as indicated by the seller, presumably it is not necessarily shown on a rainy day in Spain (whether on the plain or not) either. The usually helpful Air Britain site at http://airhistory.org.uk/rfc/aircraft.html doesn't have much on this aircraft either. So does anyone know who operated A1581 and perhaps where the photo was taken? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
Quite correct Clint
Two things are correct in that headline, it was a rainy day the photo was taken and Spain did by Avro 504K postwar. However the picture does not show any of them. I cannot see any reason for Martinsyde to send down a G.102 postwar to Spain. By 1919 the aircraft was certainly past its prime and why Spain should be interested in worn out second hand Elephants is beyond me. Spain bought only fighters (F.4 and F.6) from Martinsyde. A1581 is known to have been issued to C Sqn of CFS by April 1917 and coded 11 at some point with that unit. I have no fate for it but it is doubtful it lingered on until 1919. Too many ham fisted pilots around if you ask me.... Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
Thanks Stig,
So most likely the photo is from A1581s time at the CFS. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
Hi Nick
Lt Waterfall is usually listed as KIA 22 Aug 1914. Do you have some kind of new evidence which support your 16 Sep date? B Rgds Stig |

Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
Hi Stig. Sorry I was reading the wrong line on the personnel list. Waterfall and Bayly's cemetery registration is on the first document here...22 Aug.
Thanks Nick https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/fi...ent-waterfall/ |

Re: Photo Martinsyde Aircraft
No worries Nick
Don't know your age, but in my own case there are too many moments where I just sit back and think, am I getting old, or am I getting old? Well, we are moving in that direction regardless if we like it or not! Cheers Stig |
