Top (German) Ace over the Aéronautique Militaire
Hello,
I was wondering who is the top ace against the French Air Force during WWI. Look like most of the top Luftstreitkräfte aces scored the vast majority of their claims against the Royal Flying Corps which seems a bit odd as the Aéronautique Militaire engaged more aircraft (and lost more) than any WWI air force. Best regards |

Re: Top (German) Ace over the Aéronautique Militaire
Good afternoon Alfred,
interesting question. WW1: I think it was Gustav Dörr who shot down 19 SPAD's, 10 Breguet's, 4 Salmson's, 1 Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter and 1 Nieuport 28. WW2: I think it was Werner Mölders with 17 kills against the French if you take the "Curtiss" on 28Aug1940 at face value. Michael |

Re: Top (German) Ace over the Aéronautique Militaire
Good afternoon Alfred,
all aircraft that Gustav Dörr shot down were French designs, except the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter which however was used by the French in the largest numbers. All aircraft that Gustav Dörr shot down were used by the French in the largest numbers, expect the Nieuport 28, which was used by the Americans only. Therefore, it is justified to say that Dörr scored against 34 French-designed aircraft and against up to 34 French-flown aircraft. Cheers, Michael |
