Re: P-51 photos
44-73809 was flown by Lt. T. W. Trimble ( 7FS / 49FG) with their "Bunyap" insignia. The tail markings are ex-3rd Air Commando Group , dark blue with yellow numbers ( previously letters or numbers) and squadron colour tips, light blue (3FS) or red (4FS) with yellow borders. Squadron colour nose trim.
Both units were at Chitose at the same time in 1946 but 3ACG was inactivated in March and their planes were collected there; the 49th may have taken them over. Trimble had an accident in 809 at Misawa on Nov. 11 1948; when it was transferred to the 40FS / 35FG, Lt. W. K. Hocky had another on July 18 1949 at Niigata. The other plane is an F-6D or K, possibly 71TRG (HQ) from Yokota; the Group was disbanded then re-activated. Nick |

Re: P-51 photos
Hi Nick
The backside of No 1 clearly states date and place which makes it a F-51D. The backside of No 2 is blank but I agree, it certainly is a PR model, and if they were taken at appx the same time a RF-51D (K). I don't have any base lists for US units, so I don't know which F-51 units were in Japan in 1948 but 71TRG certainly fits. Cheers Stig |

Re: P-51 photos
Stig,
If you use the AAIR accident database ( http://92.53.241.206/dbSearchAF55.asp) and look for (e.g.) P-51 for type and JPN for country, you'll get a good idea what Squadrons and/or Groups were based in that country around 1948. At first glance there were 35th FG (Johnson AB), 8th FG (Ashiya), 425th and 475th FG (Itazuke) and some more... Regards, Leendert |

Re: P-51 photos
Hi Lee these are the F-51 groups based in Japan in Sept. 1948 ( the photo date).
8th. (Ashiya) 35th. (Irumagawa) 49th. (Misawa) 475th. (Itazuki) 3rd ACG. (Chitose) (disbanded next month). Plus 71TRG. (Yokota) (82TRS only). The second photo could be 82nd, yellow spinners with black back-plates and narrow command stripes. Interesting that Trimble's plane is 7FS as there is a colour photo of the 3ACG lined up at Chitose with Maj. Watkins' plane in front with the 7th. Bunyap badge and 2x Sqn. Commander's bands which would date it Jan.- Oct. 1947. The 3ACG have full colour tails as in the second photo. If you want to see it you can PM me your e-mail. Regards Nick |

Re: P-51 photos
Stig,
Mystery! If you get a homepage with 'Menu' in the right upper corner, just click on it and 'resources' will appear. When I click on the links I gave you, the right page does show up.... Or try the former name of the website: https://www.aviationarchaeology.com/ Regards, Leendert |
