Savoia-Marchetti SM 79 marking
Hi,
Can anybody please tell me why some Italian SM 79 torpedo bombers carried a black 'X' under each wing, inboard of the round fasces national marking. Was it a campaign marking, an identification marking? Thanks, Doug |

Re: Savoia-Marchetti SM 79 marking
This sounds like a Spanish Civil War marking - are you sure about the torpedo-bomber bit?

Re: Savoia-Marchetti SM 79 marking
SM79s had this marking (also on the white fuselage band sometimes) during the Abyssinia campaign 1940-41, presumably a theatre addition; I've also seen it on 2 or 3 SM81s and Ca.133s. there. I wouldn't think such a distinctive shape would need extra recognition markings though ?
