You used to see the name Smith on a lot of instruments such as speedometers, oil temperature guages, rev counters etc. on old British cars. I would imagine the company would have turned to wartime miitary contracts.

Thanks for the list - there are quite a few unknown names on the list.
Out of interest regarding EMI, they started as the Gramophone Co Ltd, then became Gramophone and Typewriter Limited, then traded as ‘His Master’s Voice’ (HMV) and then Electric and Musical Industries, when did they start making aircraft instruments? Was it in WW1?
