Reading EAW "Ted" Smith's book Spitfire Diary and ask

If RAF 127 Squadron was considered a hard luck outfit?
He references the squadron was pulled from ops due to losses.
15 pilots lost.

Was this considered high attrition?

Hi Felix. These are all 29 pilots lost, the 15 you reference were in NW Europe from Sept. 11 1944 to April 6 1945; a higher average than in the Middle East (14) but for post-D-Day I don't think unusual ??

This was probably when 127 moved to the UK (Fairwood Common in S. Wales) from the continent on 21 Feb. 1945, delayed by bad weather; this was No. 11 Armament Practice Camp and they were there for a gunnery/bombing/ etc. course and "rest" ("what a break" as they had been on fighter-bomber duties). Returned to Holland on the 17 March, most sorties until their disbandment on 30 April being armed recces. with the other squadrons in the Wing (66,322,332).
