Re: German Photo Album

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a German photo album. Some photos at least are from FFA 34.

Perhaps less interesting at first glance is an album from a ballom unit it does however have some aircraft photos towards the end presumably given the text on the photod fron bMFS 5.

Re: German Photo Album

Thanks for this Clint; nice links

Some of these photos taken in the St Mihiel Salient.

What is BFMS 5 ?

Re: German Photo Album

Hi Bertrand,

Thanks for the location identities.

BMFS 5 (also sometime written bMFS 5) is Bayerische Militär-Fliegerschule 5 based at Gersthofen Gablingen, near Augsburg. So presumably dating from a different stage in the original album owners military career than the France based material.

Clint

Re: German Photo Album

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a German photo album. It is almost completely without interest with regard to historical aircraft with the exception of a rather nice photo of Hawa CL.IIIa 16147/17

Stig Jarlevik will become famous soon enough
Re: German Photo Album

Quite an odd album if I may say so Clint

I wonder if there are more photos than shown? If not it is extremely overprized.
If the text visible is contemporary it is striking the individual who wrote it didn't know
the difference between a Pfalz D.III and an Albatros D.III

Also the photos just don't connect with each other. Boelcke never flow any of the types
shown and there is a mix between fighters (Albatros, Fokker, Pfalz) and recce types
(DFW, Hannover, Rumpler)

Without checking (since I know you are better than me on WW 1 marking) what unit used
the white arrow and come to think of it isn't the C.4 visible on the Rumpler unusual
instead of the much more common C.IV??

Cheers
Stig

Re: German Photo Album

Hi Stig,

Sold already. So underpriced I guess

For anyone interested I discussed this album with Stig as the board was unavilable for a protracted periof. My reponse was as follows

Now to the Album. Yes there are some unusual elements. It seems to me that options are

  1. The compiler of the Album served in none of the units and just collected the photos at or near the time of the Great War
  2. That the core of the Album was collected be a serving member of a German Unit or Units at or near the time.Or even later

I could easily be wrong, but here is my thinking. The compiler of the Album served with FA 7 (the aircraft with the Arrow Markings) and FA (A) 212 as shown on some of the aerial photos. The same person may then have moved on to something like a Jastaschule (the photos of the Pfalz D.III and Fokker D.III). The Fokker Dr.I photo possibly being taken at a visit to Jasta B, or to my mind more likely was available more widely at the time, this also being the case for the Boelcke photo. But an equally valid and less complicated case could be made for the case that most or all were collected by an individual at any time between then and now.In any event or or two photos of aircraft with serials I hadn't seen before and as you say the C.4 is interesting on the Rumpler, though we have seen this use of contemporary numerals before for example on the Fokker D.7.
Stig responded saying that he felt

The unit sounds OK but I am rather leaning towards it has been collected bya non-flying/technical individual.

I agree thast this would very much make sense.

If anyone has any further thoughts on the above I'd be interested. Also I would welcome any views on the serial of the Albatros D.V, that is the first from the right in the shot, adjacent to D.2005/17

Regards,

Clint
