Photo of B-24 42-78106 in Luftwaffe markings

Good morning,

http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/album....pictureid=1608

This picture was posted on ebay.de by Kurmark-Antik on July 6. Is there a story behind the damage seen in the photo?

Thanks,

Jim

Re: Photo of B-24 42-78106 in Luftwaffe markings

Hi Jim / Revi. The B-24 was assigned to the 459BG from the 460BG but new markings hadn't been applied. The Group is in the MACR.

She was sent to 2./KG200 (the transport / ferry unit) known as Detachment "Olga" at Frankfurt/Main. She was blown up by the Germans just before the war ended, at Hildesheim.
These are 2 links to the B-24 etc. See also "KG200 the true story" by P.W.Stahl who commanded the Detachment.
Regards Nick

Re: Photo of B-24 42-78106 in Luftwaffe markings

Yes they didn't change to KG200's code "A3" ( as on B-17F 42-30146 A3-BB); 'wonder why the serial 278106 was added at the top, the original is still visible . I don't think she was "Cherry II", probably confused with 42-78160 "Cherry" also from 758 / 459 who was lost in Poland 18 Dec. 1944.

Re: Photo of B-24 42-78106 in Luftwaffe markings

Also has that name on Joe Baugher and the 459th web-site; Gino Kunzle's research for "Strangers in a strange land vol.II" suggests "Cherry II" for 42-78160 as she was lost on 18 Dec., 6 months after the first "Cherry" ( June ), and both from the same squadron. This is an addition to the "B-24bestweb" site. Not a big problem though !

Regards
Nick
