Was IV. Gruppe KG 2 fly missions in the Soviet union in the summer of 1941 ?
Hi everyone,
Looking at the RL 2-III file, page 115, I find two losses for 11./KG 2 for 26 and 27 June 1941 in Lyck and Suwalki (East Prussia - VIII. Fliegerkorps). Is this a typo ? I thought IV. Gruppe was in France the whole time ... Thanks in advance oquaig |

Re: Was IV. Gruppe KG 2 fly missions in the Soviet union in the summer of 1941 ?
IV./KG 2
13.6.41: transferred to Juvincourt/France. While there, strength averaged around 15 Do 17Zs and 28 replacement crews in training. The Gruppe was in France, but perhaps a couple of its aircraft were temporarily detached and sent to I./KG 2 at Arys-Rostken/East Prussia, or III./KG 2 at Lyck. L. deZ. |

The answer is yes. From 17 June crews were flying transport flighst from Goslar to Rostken and then on 24 June flew from Rostken to Lyck to carry out bombing duties. From the FB I am looking at only 3 flights were flown before returning to Juvincourt 12 July

Re: Was IV. Gruppe KG 2 fly missions in the Soviet union in the summer of 1941 ?
Wow, that was a surprise.
I was expecting it to be a typo. So on 26-27 June two of these aircraft were written off (ER) after crash landing. I wonder if they left any more behind as replacements also. Matching strengths against losses, it looks like I./KG 2 had a couple of extra Do 17s available at the end of June. Thanks to both of you again oquaig |
