Re: Photo Nieuport
Stig,
I've looked at A6844 & B6844 and they are a MF.11 and Spad S.XIII respectively. As indicated I'm never really that trusting of my eyesight, but still read 8844. Having looked at the various options so far, I think I'd be correct when I say that in any event according to http://www.airhistory.org.uk/rfc/Nieuport.html has a serial where the first two digits is 68 higher than B6837 so a reconstructed aircraft looks probable, unless serial wrongly applied. So I do wonder about airhistory.orgs id of B.E.2c B8844, but I guess a photo would be required. Regards, Clint Last edited by musec04; 10th August 2024 at 15:36. |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Thanks for checking Clint
The mystery deepens. I suppose you don't have the Nieuport book published by C&C? I have now blown up the image as far as I can. Of course lacking the enhancement computer systems of the CIA and MI6 I have to settle with eyeball vision only... First letter seems to be an A, so what about A6644? Will check out the book when back home. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Hi Stig,
A Scandinavian travelling to Greenland to see fjords. Seems a bit like what we call a busman's holiday here in the UK Now back to the mystery Nieuport serial, I've blown the photo up to higher than 300 % and for me the initial letter remains blurry, but for the remainder I think you'll agree when you return home that the first two numerals are both 8 and that we have a genuine mystery. Alas I don't have the C&C book, but would it in any event have serials that airhistory.org does not? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Well Clint
To be honest, not exactly the fjords we are interested in but the icebergs, whales and other cetaceans, various birds not seen at home and things like that. Back to the Nieuport, did you check A6644? The 6s and 8s can be really tricky and blur into each other. Whatever the case, it remains a mystery and perhaps we should get some experts into the fray? I think C&C has a website somewhere and what about the Aerodrome? Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Stig I was sure it was A8844 but think you're right about A6644; 644-646 were N17 purchases from France and 6644 was shot down with 1 Sqn. 18 May 1917 ( 2/Lt. T.H. Lines POW).
Easy confirmation when a close-up though as here.... https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F...lane_A6686.jpg Nick |

Thanks for checking Nick
Since A6644 is now a very good competitor, I would say we have a pretty good match. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Nieuport
Hi Stig. A bit more on Nieuport B1597 courtesy of The Aerodrome; Lt. G D Hunter was shot down (POW) by Kurt Schneider Jasta 5 near Ecourt / St. Quentin (13th victory). Also flown by W M Fry. It was a photo escort and Hunter was re-patriated as wounded on Jan. 1 1918.
