Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on delcampe are a couple of photos of a Caudron,a R.11, I think being blessed by a priest

https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...046255092.html

https://www.delcampe.net/en_GB/colle...046254849.html

The aircraft has a escargot ailé insignia on the nose. Any thoughts on whether this is a SAL.1 unit marking or something else. It appears to differ in detail from any Escadrille 1 marking i've seen

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Well Clint

I can't imagine anyone would paint a meerkat on an aeroplane back in 1915 or so.
Some 90-95% of the Esc personal would not have a clue what that was.

I have seen a few in the wild in Botswana and Namibia but how well known would they
have been in Europe? Really cute fellows by the way!!

It surely is an angry/startled cat! A meerkat never reacts that way.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Very tricky digits Clint

I myself read them as C.5651, but I admit I am very hesitant doing so.
Main reason is I believe the first and third digits are the same and since I only have Caudron R.11
in the 5000 range and none in the 3000 range, well that's it I guess.

Looking at the second digit it then has to be a six since it is different from the first and third digit.

Does that make any sense?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Hi Stig,

I must admit in terms of known R.11 serials your serial appears a lot more likely. That is there are a fair number of R.11 with C.55** serials on Albin Denis http://albindenis.free.fr/Site_escad...te_Caudron.htm For my part the only R.11 serial I have in the C.36** is C.3608 and even then, this is accepting the sellers caption because even with magnification the serial is not legible.

However, I 'm going to send you a word copy of the photo I have just posted which you can magnify (say more than 400%) and which I argue shows the upper part of the first numeral being open to the left and the second numeral appears closed on the left where it loops at the bottom,we both agree that the third numeral is different.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

This is the problem we've had before, French "3"s and "5"s; this is Nieuport N.1539 (the serials are also on the wing tips) you can see the difference here between them. The Caudron looks like C.3531 to me.

I posted a couple of close-ups showing the numbers some time ago but can't find them.
Regards
Nick

Nick

Another friend of mine also thinks the SFA number is C3531 so you do have a point....

Re: Photos Caudron Aircraft

Out of curiousity I looked at the photo without being swayed by previous answers.
I also think it reads C3531.
