Hi Nick
Yes there is a lot of info available on the aircraft
"SFA No 3796 and delivered from Nieuport by Adj de Courcelles 22 April 1917 to 2 AD (engine no T8704JB)
Delivered by Lt W M Fry to 60Sq on 28 April 1917 (It seems it was more or less Fry's standard aircraft)
Fry scored with it on
2 May 1917 (C-type near Vitry)
4 May 1917 (AEG C.V in co-op with Billy Bishop in B1566)
on 6 May 2/Lt Hunter was on an afternoon patrol with t/o at 16.50H and was shot down ca 18.00H

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of the crashed N.1862. Given that some of the areas most easily used to identify Nieuports are damaged and so obscured by the crash and that the range N.18** contains several types of Nieuport can anyone identify the type shown?

Re: Photo Nieuport

A very good question Clint!

Since I am notoriously lousy with these single-engined Nieuports it is not made any easier when
I look at a crashed aircraft....

From memory Nick has much more sharp vision than me when it comes to those types.

I checked my sources (three) and of course N1862 is not mentioned in any.

Those sources are probably just as frustrated as all of us with the rather incredible SFA numbering
system...

For what it is worth, N1861 is listed as a Nieuport 17, so I have for the time being saved it as such.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Stig,

Well hopefully a better view of N.1862 appears in due course. Like yourself I've gone with Nieuport 17 in my records until that happens.

A rather more easily identifiable machine (?) Nieuport 27 5674.

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Actually a Nieuport belonging to the French embassy in Japan or a Japanese Nieuport 81 simply photographed by a member of the embassy? No obvoius military or civilian markings if Japanese.

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hi Clint. The Japanese caption at the bottom reads "aircraft flight education 32 square meters" (?), there's a very small 4-digit number in front of the tailplane possibly 1573 but could be just a factory part number.

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello Nick,

Thanks for the translation. I'm a bit surprised I must admit. I thought it was a Type 81 (Japanese Ko 1 ), so 23m would have been my expectation.

Regards,

Clint
