"Mensura wambu"
Hallo!
Has the meaning (and perhaps correct spelling?) ever been solved? I mean the inscription on a JG 77 Bf 109, see for example https://pwm.org.pl/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6595 for photos. Today Youtube suggested me video about Mensur! Quick googling provided information that mensur is academic fencing: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_fencing At least for me a new avenue of thought. But what is "wambu" (spelling?). Hi Kari. The first word is actually "Memsura"; I don't know the relevance here but it's a female name in Croatia meaning "victorious". Maybe something to do with Widowitz being born in Austria? "Wambu" is even more obscure, one meaning is a former Kingdom in Angola. Hope you find something.

I'm sure it's not a standard font (note 2 different "M"s), it would be his individual style; the name "Inge" on his Me109F was also in script. There were other examples of different presentation eg. Fw190 "Pipimann" (JG2), Fw190 "Uschi" (JG1) or Me109 "Karaya" (JG52). There were several in JG300, most differing in style.

Looking up Wambu as a name shows it is of African origin , any chance its the dog's name ?

Hi Kari,
long time, no see! I have no strong view if the word is Mensura or Memsura, but looks like latter. Anyway, just a short side track: Mensur fencing was also mentioned in Max Thimmig's book Yön saalistaja, which I translated and Koala Kustannus published in 2021. Max wrote the story of his grandfather. On the pages 32-33 it is told that Wolfgang Thimmig and his twin brother Günther indeed did have Mensur as a hobby while they were studying at Lepizig university in 1930s. It is also mentioned that Mensur was forbidden during the the 1920, but it was still done in secrecy. Starting from 1933 it was allowed again. Wolfgang Thimmig had a Mensur scar on the right side of his face, and it was consider as a honour in the academic circles. Just FYI. Best regards Raimo
