Re: Mustang II lost November 16th 1944

Hi Michel
Your information has a few errors.
The aircraft was a Mustang III FB176 which had just arrived from 83GSU and this was the first operation. On the return flight at 16.30 the aircraft suffered complete engine failure at 10,000 feet but the pilot managed to make a wheels up, forced landing in the Ostend area.
The pilot was F/Sgt O H Robison serial number 1394806 is recorded on the accident card. I don't know his first names.

Re: Mustang II lost November 16th 1944

Our friend Geoffrey Sinclair wishes to add the following:

16 November 1944, According to Norman Franks Mustang III RF-A of 65
squadron failed to return from a mission escorting Lancasters to Duren,
F/O O H Robinson.

Looks like 65 squadron sent 12 Mustangs on a Ramrod 1420 to 1630 hours,
1 Mustang category B crash landed at Ostende after engine failure. The
squadron record of events says RF-A and lists every other serial on the
mission, which it reports as escort.

RF-A listed on missions 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 13? November

Since 65 Sqn.'s code was "YT', I am curious what the "R.F.A." (as listed in the Form 541) stands for. Possibly the Wing Leader's initials?

Tom

Re: Mustang II lost November 16th 1944

Hi Guys,

Many thanks for your quick respons, too bad this isn't the mustang I'm looking for....it's too far away.
I live in the south of The Netherlands and a Mustang crashed in my area very close to the German border on November 16 or 18th 1944.
The plane crash-landed near The Voorst-Posterholt Limburg Holland.
The pilot, who suffered a broken leg, was captured by the Germans.
At least that is what the eyewitnesses said.

Regards Michel

Re: Mustang II lost November 16th 1944

Hi Michel. Eighth AF lost a P-51 on the 16th and 5 on the 18th. 4 pilots were killed and 2 captured but both were in Germany not Netherlands........

16th NOV. (Mission 715 escorts to the Aachen-Duren area, Lancasters were also in the area); the Mustang lost was 42-106896, 355FG ( Woolard POW) at Berleburg. MACR 10298. Too far east.

18th NOV. (Mission 716, fighter sweeps in Germany), the POW was Young 339FG in 44-14729 35m. north of Saarbrucken. MACR 10293. Too far south.

The 363TRG (Ninth AF) had F-6 / P-51 Mustangs at the time but no losses apparently.

Michel,

Mistaken identity and/or fate of pilot? See https://www.verliesregister.studiegr...lts?sglo=T4679

Voorst is between Posterholt (NL) and Haaren (GE).

Groet, Leendert

Hi Nick,

Many thanks for your info, that's realy bad........they are indeed too far away

Leenert, this Typhoon, is already known, but another plane went down less than 300 meters from the typhoon crash. I found there parts of a Mustang plane and the eyewitnesses told me about this. thanks anyway

Hi,

Interesting information regarding the FB176 Mustang belly landing in the Ostend area.
Any possibility to obtain the AM1180 ?

Many thanks and best regards

Luc
