Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942

Just wish to echo what DG said - I would love to read about (or view) any additional details regarding the wreckage.

Best Regards,

Paul

Hello Dimitris,

First of all many congratulations for your discoveries at the island of Milos and Kea. Secondly my responds to your questions are the following:

1. As far as I know the airplane is not salvaged by the Greek Air Force. The travel guide I have in my hands was edited in 2008 so I don;t know if in the past year happened anything.

2. I don;t know the exact condition of the airplane wreckage. Taking in concern the existing photo I would say that it is not in very good condition.

3.The depth , according to the diver , is 33 meters.

4.Yes , I am kind enough to attach a scanned copy of the article!!!!!! :-)

Hope I help you in anyway.

Tasos

I thank you very much Tasos.

As far as I know from friends, nothing happened in the last year. The scanned article informs (I just mention it for the non Greek speaking readers ) that there where discrepancies, regarding the salvage costs, between the finders (the Greek sponge divers) and the authorities (the Greek Air Force). The sponge divers refused to work for such a low salary. Acceptable

2. I don;t know the exact condition of the airplane wreckage. Taking in concern the existing photo I would say that it is not in very good condition.

Well, if the photo is from 1991 I also think that not much has been left, almost 20 years later, due to the souvenir hunters and the swallow water. In any case it is worth a visit to this area just to check out the location, the condition of the wreckage and for sure to take some good photos.

3.The depth , according to the diver , is 33 meters.

Alas, it is accessible almost for everybody who wants to just have a "souvenir" of a WWII wreckage without taking care of the importance of such a historical subject.

4.Yes , I am kind enough to attach a scanned copy of the article!!!!!! :-)

I thank you very much indeed Tasos!!!

Hope I help you in anyway.

Absolutely

Re: Ju88 Loss Data for I./KG 54, October 1942

hello guys
well i realy dont know why sooo many people are interested in an old rusty wreck in the middle of the sea,but let me tell you my story:
when i was a little boy,my grandfather always told me the story, how he and his crew crashed into the sea with their JU88 next to the island of psathoura...well i was about 8 years old and thought, hey,i will go there one day and will find that plane...of course i had no idea how dificult it will be to find a plane somewhere in the sea next to a little greek island..but that was my plan more than 25 years ago...
my granfather was the radio operator in that plane and he made many flights together with lt. hasso holst and the rest of the crew. after my gradfather died about 10 years ago,i got all his medals and also his flight book with all the flights he made and inside that book i red also the notes about the crash they made.....(when i will be back in germany,i will upload that page,i imagine that you could be interessted?)
in october 1942 my granfather broke his nose accidently,so he couldnt flight for a couple of days, that was his luck, because as you know,lt holst and the rest of the crew never came back on the 14.10.1942
after all these years i nearly forgot the stories my grandfather told me...but some weeks ago,i found some letters, he wrote me, some years befor he died...and than i remembered me and i started to use the internet to find out more about "his" JU88...for me it was a great feeling when i realised that somebody found that wreck...and when i saw the picture...it was amazing...so know i am planning to go there this year (would be great to be there at the 27.may 2012,exactly 70 years later...) but well,we will see...
greets and thank you
mike

Note that the WNr. 140212 was reported as a loss for KGr. 806 not once, but twice, after the Holst loss, which should resolve the WNr. conflict.
