Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Hi,
In regard of the stated low rate of reaction (if not lack of reaction and co-operation), I am wondering if posting here is really a good idea. I believe informations are available, here or there. So, why not sharing them in this thread? Any useful participation concerning this Spitfire? 19 july 1941 AZ°? City of Worchester II Serial? Place? Pilot? http://cgi.ebay.de/Orig-Foto-abg-Spi...item230ae18627 |

Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Thank you, Andrei and Peter for your replies.
Always interesting to get precisions on somewhat "obscure" facts. Regarding P8046, was the full code AZ°O or another one? |

Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Photo 2 - Spitfire W3183 QJ -P of 92 Sqn was shot down by Bf109 near Lille on 11th July 1941 while escorting Short Stirlings.
Its likely to have been the Mk V piloted by P/O J Dougall who became POW. Norman Franks in his entry in Fighter Command Losses Vol 1 was unsure of the serial (stating W3120?) possibly as it was not clear in ORB. But now we know!

Re: Which stories behind these photos?
Photo 3 is another QJ-O coded Spitfire Mk V of 92 Sqn but the serial is so faint I cannot make it out. It seem to be a P or an R in it.
The Baltimore (with AO-W) codes is clearly in the Western Desert and is actually AG975 of 223 Sqn lost near El Daba on 9th Oct 1942. The AO codes are said to have been dropped by the Sqn at this time so its nice to see proof they were still in use and see both sides of the fuselage. Next the Whitley with GE- T codes is from 58 Sqn which was in Bomber Command till Oct 1939 then went to Coastal Command only to return to Bomber Command in February 1940 where it stayed till 8th April 1942. However it then went back to Coastal Command again for the rest of the war. With no ASV visible and the dark sides to the camo colours it dates this from autumn 1940 to May 1942 when Whitley Mk VII were received
