Clint this is aso 29 Sqn in Germany; usual pilot was Capt. T. S. Harrison one of several S. Africans in 29. The 3 Flights used letters in different locations (plus the white band).

A3474 was an interesting RE8; shot down by ground fire captured intact.
Markings are distinctive though; a relatively new aeroplane as the factory markings are clear including the "ballast" lettering under the cockpits, the "LIFT HERE" (both black) and propeller logo.
Rudder reads.......
SD6349
A9707
CC
( SD = Siddeley-Deasy factory and number; 9707 the part number, CC the doping scheme--Cellon C ). The "18" was roughly chalked on and was different left-right side.
Deasy was a car company in Coventry.

I doubt there is any.
Seems it was packed straight for a US delivery after it had been built.

Thanks for the reply. You'll know of course where I found the information about the US and I strongly suspect that you have a better source of information


So having said that I see that other aircraft with later serials from the same batch were delivered in mid to late 1918. So when I read delivered to the US Govt in 00.01.20 does this actually mean by that date,rather than at that date?,so that C9083 may have actually gone to the US at some time in late 1918?

Sorry to say I have only very basic information regarding the US SE.5a

It seems the problem was that the US should provide the engines for those aircraft ordered.

Reading between the lines I think the US took on a bit more than they actually could chow, and the engine
supply was delayed. If exactly C9083 was a victim of that problem is something I cannot see, but
not impossible. Most of these aircraft thus ended up in storage.

Whatever the case, there is no reported British activity with this aircraft and loads of others whose records
only says 'shipped to USA'.

Baroda No 1 was a gift aircraft from the Gaekwad of Baroda (also spelled Gaikwar) in India, see here

As was the practice during WW 1, gift names were often "inherited" from one aircraft to another,
so the first Baroda No 1 was BE.2c 2521 used by No 2 Sq which crashed 3 April 1917.

Don't know if our usual site says when A3073 went to India and No 31 Sq but it inherited the Baroda No 1 title
