Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Tricky one Clint
Four different FE.2 used the Presentation name Montreal No2 I have chosen A5661 for one reason only and that is the Roman digits IV. A5661 was the fourth one using it. Right or wrong? No idea.... Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Thanks Stig. I did wonder about this. Why were multiple aircraft assigned the same presentation name and number As you're aware Montrel No.2 being far deom an isolated example.? Any thoughts?

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
I can't say straight away why, but it was very common.
I believe it had to do with a decision taken by Sir David Henderson that a SOC aircraft should be replaced with another one carrying the same donor name. The Cross & Cockade publication I use as reference does not explicitly say so but I think that is what they mean. That publication is a bit old by now and only states three Montreal No2, but their separate, and much more recent, FE2 book gives one extra aircraft in its list. In the intro to the first reference they say that appx 600 donor names are known and they were used on appx 1400 aircraft. Unfortunately not all donors can now be connected to an aircraft's identity. Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay are a couple of photos of Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c 2763 of 13 Squadron in German hands. Does anyone know how this machine was lost? https://www.ebay.de/itm/386795679160...UAAOSwtYNl1HuE https://www.ebay.de/itm/386795678042...gAAOSwTXFl1Hr4 The seller has other WWI related photos, which, though probably less interesting can be found here https://www.ebay.de/sch/i.html?_dkr=...ung+23&_sop=10 Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Thank you both for the replies.
Col, is there any indication as to whether Chaloner was actually shot down by FFA 23 as one might assume, rightly or wrongly, by the seller's caption in The Sky Their Battlefield II ? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of a Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.7 of the Machine Gun School. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186312571...Bk9SR5jAm4C8Yw The aircraft would apear to have been used as a target tug,if that term was used at the time. Speaking of which, does anyone know if the British were the first to use aircraft as target tugs,or was the technique used earlier elsewhere? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft
Hi Clint. Not really my subject but this is RE7 2286 presentation name "KHAIRPUR" just visible ( a state in modern Pakistan); possibly a short time with 21 Sqn. then to the Southern Air Depot 8 Oct. 1916 for various duties including target-towing (not the ideal choice), the photo may be Hythe. The target cloths were streamed from the port interplane struts hopefully on a long line!
According to Cross and Cockade there was another Khairpur, 2290 with 12 Sqn. in 1915. Their serials were on the fins. Regards Nick |
