14:05 - 15:10 (M) 8 Yak-1 of 1 GIAP led by Guards Mayor Grigoriy Bogatov was covering operations of the Soviet 2 Guards Tank Corps in the area of Vilkaviskis, Lithuania. They observed 12 Ju 87 at an altitude of 1000 m. drop bombs on Soviet forces and turn to the west. They attacked the Ju 87s and an air battle ensued. Bogatov claimed a Ju 87 (12) and Gds. St. Lt. Vladimir Senchenko claimed a Ju 87 (11) 6 km north of Vilkaviskis. The German fighters made their presence known by damaging the Yak-1 of Leytenant Yur’ev who was listed as missing but later returned. He had made an emergency landing on the fuselage at 6 km north of Vilkaviskis. On the German side, Feldwebel Martin Ulbrich of 11/JG 51 claimed a Yak-9 (17) at 13:24 at an altitude of 3500 meters at PlQ. 25 Ost/25451. |
