Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Italian Nieuport 11 Ni 1670 at:

https://www.ebay.it/itm/01671-FLAVIO...MAAOSws3Rf~hJ6

Flavio Torello Baracchini trained on the Nieuport 11 at Cascina Malpensa and flew the type with 81 Squadriglia. No machine gun is visible on this machine so perhaps this photo is taken at the training school??

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Clint

Not sure what we actually are looking at, but some points which are strange.

a) Robert Casari does not mention any N9041 as being delivered to the US AEF.
b) The serial presentation is very unusual for either a French or US operated Nieuport. I have now looked at some 150 photos and not a single one carry their numbers on the fuselage. The US didn't repaint the French style s/n. They added to them.
c) The absolute majority of French primary and fighter trainers (Nieuport) went to Issoudun (3rd AIC), but 102 Aero Sq was not part of that establishment. I have very little about that unit (close to zero in fact) but what I have found out, it belonged to the 2nd Aviation Instruction Center

I am basically useless in identifying wrecks. Don't know why, but I simply seems to lack that eye.
But is it really a Nieuport we are looking at?

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello Stig,

I was hoping you would answer.

I went with a Nieuport because I thought I read an N before 9041.

Looking at your points, all very valid has caused me to question my initial identification, based on the 9041 which appeared credible for a Nieuport and the number 18 which is in AEF syle.

However, I now deduce, to answer your question is it really a Nieuport we're looking at, No. It is in fact Avro 504K D9041 and I'm going to remove the post from this thread if I can and place it under the Avro thread.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Ahhh yes, of course

D9041 was very much one of those Graham-White built 'K' models supplied to USA.
The initial batch of 33 aircraft were delivered to Issoudun in October 1918 (tests had already taken place with 6 Parnall built ones in July) and 12 more in November. All further contracts were of course canx with the Armistice in place.

The only problem which remains is why the seller says 102 Aero Sq.
I am pretty certain it did not exist at Issoudun since it was not part of the 3 AIC

Come to think of it, is the last digit in the Issoudun code 0? All photos I have seen of the Avros show them having codes in the 1600 or 1800 range.
So this one is 18xx.....

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Nieuport 12 bis N.1864 at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/1-Weltkrieg-...kAAOSwBRdgFaNi

Albin Denis has this machine as belonging to N.77. So is the star just a personal marking, it somewhat resembles the unit marking of VB.101?

The same seller has a photo of the remains of N.1706, a Nieuport 21 of N 75 at:

Re: Photo Nieuport

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of a Nieuport captioned as 101 st Aero Squadron at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Ph...AAAOSwThxgJbVy

The photo is captioned as original, however the same seller has two other Nieuport photos on offer, captioned as original which can be seen in higher resolution on wikipedia.

Clint

Re: Photo Nieuport

Clint the Nie. XIIbis is from N77 at the time their Nieuports had personal emblems, before the pennant style; Adj. Raoul Monrouzeau and Sgt. Andre Koestner were POWs ( 7-11-1916).
The red star was also used as an early insignia by Esc.103.
Nick

Edit....Esc.101 had a blue star.

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Nieuport 23 A6796 of 60 Squadron at:

Also on ebay is a photo of a downed RFC Nieuport 23 A679* at:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/Foto-abgestu...MAAOSwwjRgGRbD

The same seller has a photo of a more intact Nieuport in German hands at:

Unfortunately while the serial is shown on the aileron it is not legible.

Re: Photo Nieuport

A679* probably either A6794 E. J. Pascoe 29 Sqn. KIA 14/4/17 ( V. Doring Jasta 4)
or
A6797 F. Sadler 29 Sqn. KIA 21/4/17 ( Schafer Jasta 11).
Both Types 23.
