Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Hello Stig,
Am I completely satisfied with this link as an answer, well no, but the site owner claims to have seen a photo of a Pomilio PF: http://www.worldairforces.com/Countries/italy/itl.html Obviously I'd like to see that photograph, assuming the machine in my link isn't. I hesistate to ask, but could Kees be of any assistance? Also, I've looked at the Pomilio WDF P.10 and an Ansaldo A.3 or A.4 might be an answer. Wildest speculation here, but could the putative PF have been redesignated as either of these machines? Regards, Clint |

Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Hello,
Currently on delcampe is a photo of Ansaldo SVA 10 13220 at: https://www.delcampe.net/fr/collecti...011147659.html This serial shows that the serial range of this batch extended beyond the 13214 given in WDF 122. Regards, Clint |

I was wrong. There was a Pomilio PF at the end of the war, and this is it. It never went into production, but was the forerunner of the Ansaldo A.300 Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Can't say I have heard of any official testing.
Some RFC pilots flew it in Italy (Barker for instance) but I don't believe that was in any official capacity. The stamp on the back should not be interpreted as an official statement tests were made on the speciman in question. More probable, to me, is that the Italians gave photos, for various reasons, to official RFC institutions etc and we are looking at one of them. Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Hi Stig,
Sounds credible. On the other hand its not impossible ,I guess, that an example was tested officially by the RFC either in Italy or in the UK. Alas my collection of Italian related aircraft books is not large enough to either rule in or rule out evaluation. There's an Italian book on the SVA which I've just tried ordering from Amazon.it, but they won't deliver to the UK.Curses.A side view with a serial would have been helpful. The hat of ground crew uniform looks like it might be British, but again, more info required. To my mind the question is, why send a photo specifically to the experimental section. Sure I can understand photos being provided to the RFC/RAF for identity purposes, but what possible use has such a photo for a UK based establishment.Definitely more information need before reaching a definite conclusion. Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Hello Stig,
It would appear that the Ansaldo was tested by the RAF after all. Please see answers to my question at: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/...-with-the-rfc/ Had I known the serial I would have been able to say that aircraft was tested in Britain myself as WDF 130 P.6 has a little info, though not as informative as the two posts on the Great War forum. Re: Photos Ansaldo Aircraft
Ha, ha Clint
One should never say never. I looked in the WDF (all three) but just in the end where normally the text brings up service with other Air Forces and such things. Typically it appeared in the beginning.... I have a book about Martlesham Heath - not mentioned at all. However I found a small clipping from Cross & Cockade (overlooked last time) where Lord Balfour mentions he flew the aircraft from Orfordness to Bircham Newton. No dates except "Spring 1918". He had cooling problems and upon arrival the engine seized. He claimed it was the last flight of that aircraft, but as we can see it was not. If Alegi is correct it was even returned to Italy. Not every day my knowledge about an aircraft in RFC (?)/RAF service gets trippled.... Cheers Stig |
