Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
Thanks. The combat report is quite specific that they attacked a 219-their description of it is good. They reported strikes all over the fuselage and wing roots after which it dived away and they saw a white flash on the ground which they 'thought' was the ac hitting the ground. They only claimed a probable which was later stepped up to a destroyed

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
Marcel,
Do you know the werknummer of this particular machine (Hemm's)? Was it later repaired or considered S.O.C.? Chris Thanks for sharing the details of the Combat Report. |

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
I returned home today to find so many responses. Many thanks to all. Foster's claims appear to be very accurate. Based on what has gone before it seems possible his three Ju88G claims in January 1945 might be accurate too.

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
Ron Ferguson's "The Heinkel He 219, A Research Paper (3rd Edition)" has a loss from 2./NJG 1 on 25/26 September: W.Nr. 190098, G9+EK with Ltn. Günther Schirmer and Gefr. Wilhelm Rosneberger wounded. The aircraft crashed at Münster-Handorf with 95% damage. Ferguson tentatively links this with Foster's claim (noting the location as a good match for example) but says the connection remains uncertain.

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
From what I can see, 604 Sqn were effectively on a rest 24-25 Sep 44 and Foster's claim was in December?

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
My source has the 24/25 September date. Perhaps incorrect and December is an option. Cross-fertilisation among sources is not unknown. Your sources are? Perhaps the crossover date of 25 September 1944 is a solution? Or the casualty report is late? Unless we have another He219 claim on 24/25 September 1944?

Re: He219 lost 24/25 September 1944
Ferguson suggests there's a question about the date of the claim … but three months?

Chris Shores was still listing it in his Aces High, 1994 edition. However in his 2nd Tactical Air Force Vol 2, 2005 edition, he has clearly changed his mind and switched to 24/25 Dec! Looks like Chris G is right..... Cheers Stig |
