Re: La Kampfgeschwader 6 - Peter Taghon - Lela Press
Does someone really believe that these books sell better in French than in English?

Re: La Kampfgeschwader 6 - Peter Taghon - Lela Press
French publishers evidently see a market among the estimated 76 million native French speakers, 235 “daily fluent speakers” and 75-110 million who speak it as a second language. France is rightly proud and protective of its language and culture.

Yes, but why English publishers don't pick these up with vastly bigger markets? Surely French publishers cannot translate and publish these markedly cheaper than British ones.

I suggest you contact any English language book publisher you like and make the suggestion. Or ask why they don't pick up foreign language books for translation. I grew up with parents who spoke 5 languages.

Ed: I grew up with parents who spoke exactly one language, learned just English in school while wasting lots of time for the legally mandatory but useless Swedish.

Re: La Kampfgeschwader 6 - Peter Taghon - Lela Press
One small UK-US publisher that has started to work with French colleagues (at Lela Presse) is Casemate. One Roba tome and one Saintes volume (forthcoming) along with two 'aces' titles last year adapted so far. Mortons are also about to dip their toes in the water. I'd imagine that UK publishers are put off by the supposed costs of translation - but its really not expensive at all ..if you know who to ask. Of course if the title has already appeared in French then sales are necessarily impacted, although I'd imagine that fewer UK-based bibliophiles are buying books from Europe since the start of the year. Its probably more likely that a French-language publisher will produce a title in English themselves though, IIRC Yannis at caraktere lives in the UK (or used to?) and of course Chris writes for him a fair bit too..

I think that the "unknowns" in publishing need to be explored, including translations. I have worked in book publishing for decades and the only way I learned was to ask questions and do more research.

Re: La Kampfgeschwader 6 - Peter Taghon - Lela Press
Note Peter Taghon is a native Dutch speaker, which, beside some Dutch publications, already published in German with VDM Heinz Nickel, books who were translated and elaborated in French by Lela Press. Step to English is not that far away as Neil said through the Casemate/Lela connection.
