Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
It might just be that you didn't mention it, or may be Alegi doesn't, but having today reached 261 Squadriglia in Gentilli and Varriale I Repart, I see that that Macchi M.5 7056 in the link above served with that unit. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hello,
Currently on ebay is a photo of Macchi M.13080 flown by Prince Aimone di Savoia at : https://www.ebay.it/itm/S-A-R-AIMONE...gAAOSw-rReClDq The caption has the machine as a M.7, but I have other Macchi flying boats in the 1308* range as definite M.5 machines. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Photo has already been published in Italy by Giorgio Apostolo.
The type is an odd one. Number built is reported on the 'net as between 8 - 10 and even a civil version the M.12bis should have been built However there are no known (published) MM numbers and certainly no civil registered ones. It is only mentioned in connection with the Schneider Trophy races in 1920 and then as a non-starter. My guess is the model was totally unsuccessful, failed to be ready as late as 1920. Possibly Macchi tried to convert it to civil use as the M.12bis but if they did, it was never registered. Thus I believe only one was built. Anyone who knows more? Cheers Stig |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Hi Stig,
Disappointing that I've posted an already seen photo. But thanks for the heads up anyway. Now as you'll recall I have been underwhelmed by Aeronaut's Italian Aviation in the First World War,but it does have a small piece on the M.12. One photo which can also be seen on the net https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/ma...t-9888805.html I would say that it has a serial number before the M.12,but I cant read it. Davila has gone with no more than one or two examples ordered by the RM and also references the civilian M.12 bis with an enclosed cabin for three. I fear this doesn't really add much to what you already know. We really need an Italian expert. Regards, Clint |

Re: Photo Macchi Flying Boat
Thanks Clint
I haven't seen that photo before. Still hesitant if there actually is any MM number visible. Macchi M.12, yes, but anything else? Nahhhh I was however rather amused with the editor's comments on the website. He is overflowing with words which says absolutely nothing. Guess once if I gave a thumb up or down?..... Cheers Stig |
