Re: W/Cdr E.J.Carter DFC C.O. of 97 Squadron
There was quite a flurry of activity in the media during 2012 following the discovery of the wreckage of Carter's Lancaster:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/news...ding-ring.html http://www.97squadron.co.uk/Coningsb...%20Carter.html https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=...0d-day&f=false http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-li...ndy-68-1355246 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...dentified.html https://somethingverybig.com/2013/04...and-cover-ups/ Carter's aircraft was shot down by Oberleutentant Helmut Eberspächer; should you be interested I have a copy of his account of the action as it appeared in a 1995 edition of Luftwaffen-Revue. Eberspächer actually accounted for three bombers, all of which were silhouetted against thin overcast by strong moonlight. Brian |

Re: W/Cdr E.J.Carter DFC C.O. of 97 Squadron
An excerpt from the 97 Sqn ORB that recorded Carter's reaction to his last target at the afternoon briefing.
"The target had been given us at about 1pm. It was a battery of coastal heavy guns on the French coast at a point called St Pierre du Mont, which is situated just on the south eastern base of the Cherbourg Peninsula, also La Peanelle. It seemed quite a normal target until various other things came trickling in – things such as convoys to be avoided – keeping strictly on track, news of impending naval actions to the East, and many other things, until one became aware of the obvious that the invasion of Europe was about to commence. The Squadron Commander was heard to say “Thank God I’m still on ops and not at an OTU" |
