Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Hi Stig. This is a NAF / Curtiss T.S. ( it's on the photo) but not sure whether TS-2 or -3 as the engine varied.

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

First I thought you were kidding me Nick

But I looked again and admit that really odd engine and radiator threw me off completely

I have checked my files and cannot find a single photo of either the TS-2/3 or TR racer versions.

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Perhaps Clint

The engine (or at least the spinner) differs.
I would very much like to see photos of both TS-2 and -3 before making a judgement.

Anyway a very nice find!!

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

The TS-2 as a racer, and the first of the 2 built (A6646) at Pensacola. Don't know about you but I find these engine installations confusing. Not unusual for me now.

Nick

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Hi Nick,

Yes,the TR-2 as a racer,that is re-engined with a Wright engine,sounds about err... right.

Clint

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Great job Nick!!!

A TS-2 it is! The engine is the Aeromarine U-8-D

The TS-1 with its initial Lawrence engine and later Wright J-4 engine is easy to spot.
First time I see the Aeromarine U-8-D engine identified in an airframe.

With regard to the Curtiss Trophy Race 8 Oct 1922 we do now have photos (your find)
of all the TS/TR aircraft which participated.
I believe the 1000 aircraft photo site is wrong when they say the last TS-3 (A-6449 as a TR-2)
took part in that race. I have no evidence it actually did

Race No 11 (TS-2) A-6446 retired at lap 4
Race No 12 (TS-1) A-6304 retired at lap 6
Race No 15 (TR-1) A-6303 won the race
Race No 16 (TR-3) A-6447 retired at lap 4

What do you got?
Cheers
Stig

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Just a quick question about the engine used. Joe Baugher seems to have the Aeromarine engines in a number of the racing aircraft replaced by the Wright engines. I don't suppose you would have written Aeromarine unless you were pretty sure. Whats your thinking on this?

Clint

If you check the first link given by Nick, you will see that the engine is identified in the photo from the race

Its nose configuration is very different from the engine used in the photo you found at the SDASM site

Cheers

Re: Photo Hanriot Aircraft

Hi Stig,

Ah, possibly talking at cross purposes. I was referring to the photo in the original Hanriot (we've come a long way from Hanriot!) post. Am I wrong or is that not in fact a different engine to that shown on Nick's link to the various NAF machines and TS-2 particularly, and perhaps a Wright engine.

Regards,

Clint
