Re: Photo Curtiss Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay are two photos of a Curtiss JN-4D(?) serial 212* at:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TX-Texas-Sa...sAAOSwt2lfQyd7

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TX-Texas-Sa...MAAOSwf2RfQyc1

To be honest I'm not totally sure of the type of aircraft shown. Checking Joe Baugher's site at http://joebaugher.com/usaf_serials/1908-1920.html which I usually do leaves me no clearer as 212 was a Sturtevant S-4 and all machines in the 212* range appear to have been cancelled.

Regards,

Clint

Re: Photo Curtiss Aircraft

Hi Clint

Pity the photos are so indifferent....
What you are looking at are not US Signal Corps/Air Service serial numbers, but those huge training centers' own code system digits.
In 1918 Curtiss with good help of other sub-manufacturers were spitting out Jennies as fast as they could.
At some point, with the US training centers being swamped with all these trainers, someone came up with the good idea to have their own code numbers all very neatly collected together instead of the enormous mixture of various true serial numbers.

Pity for us, but admittedly a relief for everyone working at those bases at the time.

Cheers
Stig

Hi Stig,

Thanks for that. I felt pretty sure you'd have the answer. Mystery solved.

Re: Photo Curtiss Aircraft

Hello,

Currently on ebay is a photo of Burgess built Curtiss N-9H 2455 at:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WW1-Photo...IAAOSwhL1fz3HP

The seller points out that this machine wears the markings of the 94th Aero Squadron and no doubt this is the machine flown by Major Sue Denim of that unit on 1st April 1918 in which he dispatched 8 Fokker D.VIII within an hour. Thus at a stroke becoming the leading N-9H ace of the war.

Clint
