Re: Furstenau/Handrup Airfield

Herpy's coordinates are 49° 31' 24'' N 4° 12' 30'' E as per Google Earth...Was it something interesting there?
And you are very much in the right about East Anglia...However you will agree with me that German air bases are fortunately rather few around there!

Hi JV,

well, the Germans may have had a wish.....

anyway, you coordinates for Herpy are in the middle of the town, I knew where that was. I was looking for the exact location of the airfield and it's boundaries. II./JG 6 was stationed there in August 1944.

cheers,

John

Re: Furstenau/Handrup Airfield

Hello John!

I was unable to find a direct clue about this airfield; However there was a WW1 airfield at Condé-sur-Herpy (1 km E of Herpy) and also mentioned at Chateau-Porcien (another km E of Condé).
I suspect very much that the two WW1 airfields are the same and the JG6 just reused the old place as a landing ground. The geography around let me think that the location is probably the large field on the south shore of the Aisne river just 500m SE of Herpy/1 km SW of Condé (not many flat places with sufficient dimensions around). I cannot prove it, though...
