Re: Mosquito loss in the Po Valley, Italy - 22 April 1945
Hello,
Nothing more in the 6 pages of the MACR other than what you have already related in your first post. From the book by Nick Beale, "Air War Italy 1944-45" has little more than the following - Page 205 "22 April 1945 Oblt. Sommer flew T9+FH over the Po Valley, covering the German retreat. After what appeared to be a solo weather reconnaissance about 30 night- attack sorties were mounted round Bologna. Four or five aircraft strafed II Corps HQ and a single aircraft shot up Fifth Army HQ around midnight. A lone Ju 188 flew a short mission. That night an aircraft in Croat markings took off from Milan-Linate for Spain. This was an S.83T (factory number 34013, formerly civil registration I-ARCA) of the RSI Air Ministry, carrying VIP's and political documents to a neutral haven. The "disguise" had been adopted to circumvent political/diplomatic restrictions on landing rights and the transport landed at Barcelona airport." 1 -Oblt Sommer in T9-FH may have had contact with the Mossie ? 2 -The bit about " After what appeared to be a solo weather reconnaissance" may be the Mossie ? 3 -The second bit although it may have been later in the day is "A lone Ju 188 flew a short mission" what was this and was there any contact with any enemy aircraft that may have been the Mossie ? Sorry I cannot be of more help, good luck in your search. Alex P.S The MACR for P-61 42-39515 was 13803 (seven pages), and just to add this was a night time take off with a three man crew, the Mossie had two man crew. Perhaps someone could pin-point the positions of both a/c's crash place. Last edited by Alex Smart; 13th October 2013 at 19:11. |
