Re: Junkers 88 crash nr. Arundel Castle, 1940
I was born in Arundel and this wartime plane crash has always among many of the locals been a legend as to where within the lake this plane crashed. I have attempted to source on numerous occasions the exact location having asked several of the elderly locals for direction, so far I have three different variations on the exact place only known to be the far end of the lake.
Does anyone know if there photos of this incident I, have looked everywhere but to no avail. I do have several books on this period of Aviation history but no photos have come to light. Is there any possibility that anything remains of this aircraft within the lake or the bank where it was supposed to have possibly crashed. I would very much like to do an article for the local paper about this incident and in doing so compile as much information as possible. I have been told that Mr Andy Saunders is one of the only persons whom could assist. Please is there anyone on this forum who could advise or has any photos relating to this crash. I also was of the belief that the deceased airman from this aircraft were buried in the Ford Road Cemetery at Arundel at the far end of this Cemetery. |

Re: Junkers 88 crash nr. Arundel Castle, 1940
Bob,
The following works (available from most good libraries) should provide all the information you require: The Battle of Britain Then & Now (After The Battle 1980) pp566/7 The Blitz Then & Now Volume 1 (After The Battle 1987) p190 Battle Over Sussex 1940 (Middleton Press 1990) p14 Fw Walter BICKEL baled out but fell dead, Hptmn August STRAUCH also baled out and was discovered in a tree badly wounded and died in hospital two days later. They are both buried in St Andrews Churchyard at Tangmere (Graves 467/8). |
