Re: Luftwaffe losses PQ18 September 1942

Can I thank everyone who has helped on this thread. My grandfather was on board SS Empire Snow and I have often wondered about the cost to the Luftwaffe.

Thanks again

Here is my info regarding He 115 and PQ 18:

Re: Luftwaffe losses PQ18 September 1942

Brian,

A couple of other bits of info 1/ crew of Ltn. Ruby 2/KG26 on 13-9-42 shown as zuruck were later MIA in the Mediterranean on 9-12-1942 with additional Bs Ogef. Willi Kern. 2/ From the book U-Boat Operations of WW2 it shows U-405 picked up the crew of a He115 (2413 of I/406). The Heinkel had been damaged trying to rescue the crew of a Ju88, the U-405 then went to pick up the Junkers crew. One gravely wounded crewman was pulled out of the sea and two were seen tied to a dinghy, the U-Boat could not get to the dinghy due to a rough sea, so a seaman dived in and fixed a line to pull the dinghy in . One man was dead and the other gravely injured, unfortunately both injured men later died and were buried at sea. There is a posibility that the Ju88 was from 9/KG26 as Ff Ofw Haase and Bf Uffz Gudzent are shown as dead with the other two crewmen missing,

Regards

Brian Bines
