Rather than Soviet POWs used to ferry aircraft, they were probably former-POW that "enlisted" more or less voluntary in "Vlassov-like" formations rather than starve in POW camps.

As for the collision reported by Matti, here is the story of Ilja Savkin:


On 21 January 1943 Starshina Ilya Filippovich Savkin stole the I-16 "31" of 691 NBAP and flew to Finland, belly-landing 7 km northeats of Saarimäki, Aunus. He was handed over to the Germans on 1 May 1943 and served later with the ROA air force (the Russian air force created to support the so-called "Vlassov" army). He died on 18 August 1944%

Takeoff was airfield Darmstadt-Griesheim.
