Re: Me 262 Interception- Jan 11,1945-1 P-47 Shot down

At some point, when considering 66 year old data and the written statements of people long dead, you have to conjecture and try to imagine what "really" happened. Perhaps, I should have written: "On January 10,1945, Lt. Robert W. Nunnally, O-824550, 324th FG, 314th FS was shot down by a [probable] Me-262 over Germany, near Karlsruhe.

The fact that the claim has been identified as a actual Luftwaffe claim seems to validate my conjecture.

Sorry about the typo for Jan 11,1945.

"Probable" or "possible" would have been appropriate until confirmed. Chasing down the origins of false information is exhausting and others may accept statements as fact when they are not, thus setting them in hardened concrete, making it virtually impossible to undo the harm.

An author decided to test whether information he was providing on the Internet was being used by others without his permission. So, while I think he did himself more harm than good, he intentional put some false information into what he was writing. Sure enough, he was able to track the misinformation to a variety of published sources. One respected author was furious when this fellow revealed what he had done, as the author thought he was accessing correct information. The upshot was that his book unwittingly contains errors. No author would want this to happen to him.

There are myriad of books out there, including one I was involved with, that have false information. SOme of Chris Shores's conjectures of forty years ago still surface from time to time., even after they have been proven incorrect. I take everything with a grain of salt unless i can satisfy myself that he information is accurate.
