"On the right behind the Fw 190 F (5 weiss) 781420"

WNr. 781420 would be a Bf 109G-14. If you were referring to the FW 190, it is more likely that this is an F-8 from the 581xxx block - WNr. 581420.

Hi Franck,

Yes this is the same aircraft. Unfortunately, the image is not mine so it cannot be posted. It is however very similar to yours but less crisp though it shows more of the starboard wing.

Cheers,

David

Hi David,

Thank you! 111704 then. If I remember well I got the other picture but didn't keep it being less "crisp".
My email box is available to get any other picture of that plane!!
Thank you ad Astra for the pointer.

Best regards, Franck.

Re: Bf109K-4 at bad Aibling

Off topic, but while we're at it - Did anyone have ever seen another photo of the Bf 110 in the background of the attached one (supposedly taken at Bad Aibling too)? Looks like an early nightfighter partly repainted and/or retrofitted with G-style rudders...

Regards,
Christian

comming back to the first question

Gentelmen,

Some reflexions:

1) I made a long research (in vain) on "google image source life", I have been unable to find the original photo in the files of life (with the original reference or with the name of the photograph it could be possible to see the others photos taken the same day in Bad Aibling.

2) when I look to the photo of the Me 109 K4 (81 painted on the tail), I have the feeling that this plane has no number or marking on the fuselage between the cross and the cokpit.

3) this photo give us a very rare look on the wing uppersurfaces of a K4 (to my mind , there are no other photo of this quality giving uppersurfaces camouflage of a K4).

4) This camouflage seems to be quite a "reverse" camouflage of the others K4. It has also the particularity to have the center of the crosses filled with the dark color.

The same upper camouflage patern and these filled crosses can be seen on an other K4 photographied also among the wrecks left in Bad Aibling = photo page 124 of 'LO+ST", the excellent book published by Hideki Noro.

Does any one knows an other K4 with the same upper surface patern ?

Regards.

RB

Hello RB,

Regarding your point #2, perhaps I am wrong, but in the LIFE photo I think I can just make out the upper part of two of the usual “last three” of its WNr. on its right side aft of its Balkenkreuz.

What do you think?

I think the same, Steve. And that what is visible, looks like parts of a "81".
The moste LIFE photos are available in high resolution, I hope we can get this one too.

Re: Bf109K-4 at bad Aibling

Folks,
If you look at the hi-res scans which have been uploaded either on David's "Falcon's Messerschmitt Bf 109 website or on my Flickr account, you will notice this machine displayed it's full W.Nr. under the "Weisse 81" on it's rudder... The whole issue is to read it...

As for your point 4), Rémi, this is the normal Flossenbürg camouflage scheme, with the Balkenkreuz filled by the dark color.

Cheers
Marc
