The Fw 190, the Do 217 and the Hs 129 were the only successful German new developments during WW2. All others were pressed into production before the teething troubles were overcome. Considering the quality and success of some German pre-war designs, I guess that one of the main problems of German aircraft design and construction during WW2 lies in their "smart-aleck" approach.
BTW, what was the role of Dr. Heinrich Hertel in the development of the He 177?
