Re: JU 88 C or R with 2 diferent engines type on same plane
Thank you for the pic!
The nose is not solid, so this is a Ju88A-4 or D-1. The engines are the same - Jumo 211 with VS 11 propeller blades. Cheers, |

I think you are right Simon. Having a close look I can identify a strange round blister on right engine which make it more round.

Impossible to use two completely different engine types on the same aircraft. It may have been possible to use a Jumo 211J and a 211F as an emergency measure but I doubt this was ever used. |

Re: JU 88 C or R with 2 diferent engines type on same plane
Hi all.
Plane in IWM image is standard Ju 88 D-1 (VS 11 and Jumo 211 F/J on both sides). It was a "Westa" plane downed off Norway and has been mentioned and indentified recently here at TOCH! I think that bottom section of right hand cowling perhaps be damaged, perhaps "blown partly out" (hanging partly loose) and thus showing so well. There is absolutely no cause for spectulations on that this has "two types of engines" and frankly am very surprised on it reaching 14 separate mails. Regards -ed |

Re: JU 88 C or R with 2 diferent engines type on same plane
Hi,
In both photos, there is light reflection and optical illusions in effect. The first pic has a lot of water spray and reflection...giving the effect that the cowl is larger and a different shape. Howeever, it is exactly the same engine and cowling. That last pics again...same engines (BMW801) and cowl. The right engine looks larger, as it is close in the photo. |

Re: JU 88 C or R with 2 diferent engines type on same plane
Olve,
Thank you for showing this one. Yes and no, this is Ju 188 F-1 with BMW 801 G-2 engines (A6+CH W.Nr. 2802xx accident April 1944 linked below). But this one has same basic type (BMW 801 radial engines) on both sides. This plane of 1.(F)/120 has been stated with different engines on each side, but this unit had two sub-types of Ju 188 on strength, the Ju 188 F-1 (BMW 801) and Ju 188 D-2 (Jumo 213). Quality of this print does not be able to see exacly if it has different looking cowlings, as there was only little differences. ´But these look the same to me, same Motorverkleidung (cowlings) Other picture of same accident to Ju 188 F-1 A6+CH ... http://www.luftwaffe.no/SIG/Photo/image/p09.jpg Regards -ed |

Well, I add also my grain of salt (and my eagle eye!):
Then why does this Ju 188 have both cooling fans (related to BMW 801) ? Has Jumo 213 metal blades ? Point of the discussion I guess? ClinA-78 |
