All I can find is that 42-97218 was lost that date and not 97217.
Roger Freeman states (as does Udf) the date was 5 Sep 1944.
If I have a choice between Baugher and Freeman, I chose the latter.

Cheers

TIA

I ask because someone in Europe is offering the main data plate from the aircraft. it is the standard Boeing oval data plate with the following information.

Model - B17-G
Serial - 7690
Engine - Wright
Type - R-1820-97
A.C.T.C No. - W535-AC20292

it is definitely an original one...seller is asking 500,00 euro...which is far too much. i thought it may have some significance...?

Stig,

You are correct, the Baugher loss date/MACR are incorrect.

The OP asked which serial number his construction number (C/N 7690) would equate too. That was all the info he had. (No mention of loss date or Bomb Group/Bomb Squadron.)

Per Baugher,
B17G-45-BO
s/n 42-97173 (c/n 7476) - s/n 42-97407 (c/n 7880)
Basic math, c/n 7690 - 7646 = 44
42-97173 + 44 = 97217, i.e. s/n 42-97217

B-17G s/n 42-97217 should be Boeing c/n 7690.

Baughers dates/MACR's seem to be incorrect, but the c/n & s/n line up.
