Having looked at the photo again I think the Halifax is indeed a BIII (those engines look very round). I've attached a scan of the Halifax and it looks as though the engines, cockpit and turrets have tarpaulins over them suggesting that the aircraft may have been there for a day or two.
I know the photo was taken on the 18th September so the Horsas are almost certainly the two referred to earlier in the thread. So, with this latest development does it lead us any nearer to a positive ID of the (Bomber Command not 38 Group) Halifax? Ashley |

BTW - the Halifax in your photo has retained its mid upper turret, so even if it is equipped with Merlins makes it much less likely to be one involved with airborne ops.

The photo does indeed show a Mk.III. I think the radial engines are clear, especially the port inner, but the lower thrust line and large intake on top of the cowling are also indicators.
