Bombing Melbourne Derbyshire. RE HQ. 11th July 1940

Hello,

I am doing some research into the bombing of Melbourne back on 11th July 1940. My grandad (12 at the time) witnessed the plane flying extremely low over head, he could see the pilot it was that low. Also my grandma on my dads side was at work in Derby, she worked at a uniform makers on drewry lane Derby, she also witnessed the plane flying over Derby. Both still alive today remember it like yesterday. My grandad describes what I believe to be a Dornier, flying towards ashby. My grandma remembers a swasticker on the tail and also yellow at the rear. The plane dropped a number of bombs and killed a number of soldiers at RE HQ on church stree. Also a number of people were also injured. I also found information on a engineer killed by train in the panic later that day. I would love to find more info on this and I know that there was a plane heading to burton tutbry to bomb the ammo depot there. A plane shot down off Cromer which bombeda bridge at Bridlington. The ammo depot there and hit a bridge killing 5 with 2 c250 and 5 c50 bombs.

Can any one help further

Regards andy

Favid Smith has written a great book from eye witness accounts on that day. You can order a copy from his website. http://www.melbournederbyshire.co.uk
