Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

This is hobby, so why not have fun ... occationally? Lets take this one level further! Seriously.
Some say this is where Ju 52/3m´s come from.

Individual letter "F" for F... might not be coincidence. I did not say that!

BTW, That control tower is Catania Airfield, I think

Wow.....another one and lol at the reference

Thanks for the info about Catania, my Great Uncle flew Ju88s with KG54 out of there, so it's interesting to see some details of what it was like. Who knows....maybe he saw that incident in your picture and wet himself laughing aswell?!

The second picture let show a more heavily damaged plane that suggest the first one , but not 100 %, so first "offer" from Ed, on 7.March is the strongest contender, if plane is really from LG1...

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

Thanks very much Chris for all your help, identified as Unteroffizier Richard Hackethal.

Previous thread on here about his pilot:

And Chris also found this short article on the loss with a photo of his Beobachter:

Many thanks to all

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

I've put some more photos up at this thread on Wehrmacht History forum if anyone's interested:

If you don't want to click the link, it's in the collections sub forum. Cheers!

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

Ok, seems the Ju 88 A-4 model needs correction. I was modeller too, in old days, 1970-isch. HL+3B should of course read B3+HL (of 3./KG 77) same both ways/both sides - i.e. "Yellow H" is on right side of cross, both sides -left side aft of cross, on right side in front of cross. One more thing. Red "walkway" should be under the wavy lines, not over them. Walkways were applied at the factory, wavy lines after this. Else, this is fairly good display. Only note that photos and all paper docs fade being exposed to (strong) light for extended periods. Best make such displays with closable shutters and usually keep in the dark.

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

Thanks for your comments Ed, actually the code is completely incorrect as the model maker (a buddy of mine, hence I can't complain too much ) couldn't get the right ones. It should be B3+AN wr 1058. Listed in Radtke's history of KG54.

Thanks for the advice on the photos, the tropical uniform picture is the only one out in natural light. I keep my logbooks on my shelves and my Flugbucher safely stored away, cheers!

Humor..............

So would the resulting "child" aircraft be called an SM-88 or a Ju-79?

Re: SM79 collision with Ju88 - small collection of photos

Humour........ One more version might be: Three engines (SM-79) minus two engines (Ju 88) = one engine (or Fi 167 by adding all "geans" (88 + 79 = 167)).
Or if you add two and three engines, it might become a Zwilling... (He 111 Z with five engines)

That said, RLM system was extremely well designed by history. -Ed
