Shot Down by Flak, strafing Derna airfield
11:00 - 11:58 hours
P/O HHK Gunnis (later with 248 Sqn Portreath) and Sgt. Waller; Crash landed, Gunnis Wounded in Action - severe leg wounds, Waller put tourniquets on these limbs then took over the controls of the aircraft to fly back to base. He was awarded the DFM; Gunnis had only just been awarded a DFC, having shot 5 enemy aircraft down, so OC declined Intel Officers referral to add a Bar to his DFC.

Above happened on 28 June 1942. Gunnis claimed to have destroyed two Junkers 52 transport planes on the ground.
